Samsung Galaxy Zip FoldSamsung recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Galaxy S range and the company formally unveiled their first foldable phone: The Galaxy Fold at the event.

Garry McGregor, Vice President of IT and Mobile, Samsung Electronics Australia says that “Galaxy Fold is a symbol of the future of mobile technology, ushering in a new category of smartphones that will change the way we live, work, and play on a mobile device.”

“From the moment you pick up the Galaxy Fold and open it, you’ll discover an entirely new experience, seamlessly moving between displays without missing a beat. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is built to deliver all the power and performance Aussies expect from Samsung, now optimised for the foldable experience.”

Samsung Australia say that customers in Australia will be among the first in the world to experience the Galaxy Fold smartphone when it is launched.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Fold?

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is a Galaxy smartphone with a unique dual-display form-factor that allows users to change between a more conventional smartphone experience and something closer to that of a tablet.

Samsung’s first foldable mobile device features a breakthrough design coupled with an entirely new user experience on a Galaxy smartphone.  The main highlight of the Galaxy Fold is that it has two displays — one on the outside and another that’s revealed when you open the phone up.

A press release from the global giant specifically states that, “The internal screen does not merely bend. It folds. Folding is a more intuitive motion, and a more difficult innovation to deliver. Samsung invented a new polymer layer and created a display around 50 percent thinner than the typical smartphone display. The new material makes Galaxy Fold flexible and tough, built to last.”

Who is the Galaxy Fold for?

Samsung is targeting the Galaxy Fold at early adopters who crave a single device that can double as a phone and tablet–and are willing to pay for that versatility. Traveling professionals could also potentially use this device instead of an iPad or laptop, especially given its multi-tasking capabilities.

What is App Continuity?

Samsung’s using the Galaxy Fold to introduce a new feature called “App Continuity.” Say you’re using the Galaxy Fold with its 4.6-inch display to browse Facebook and come across a video you want to watch. If you open the Galaxy Fold to access its larger screen, Facebook will automatically open up right where you left off to tie the whole experience together.

The Multi-Active Window feature allows you to run three applications on the screen at once. So, for example, you can text in one window while looking up restaurant recommendations in another

and the phone app open for making a reservation. Or you could be watching YouTube in one window while checking your messages in another and scrolling through Instagram in a third window.

The outer display is a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The inner/main display of the Galaxy Fold is a large 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dyanic AMOLED canvas with a form factor of 4.2:3. When unfolded, the Galaxy Fold’s display stretches to 7.3 inches and you can get up to three apps simultaneously at once.
